MK May Golan (Likud) will become the new women's status minister pending Knesset approval on Sunday, according to Israeli media. 

This announcement came Thursday night. 

This will also see Golan leave her current appointed position as minister without portfolio within the Prime Minister's Office.

Who has authority over advancing the status of women in Israel?

Golan's new ministry will be transferred some of the authority and responsibility currently held by the Social Equality Ministry, which is helmed by Minister Amichai Chikli, N12 reported.

Currently, the Social Equality Ministry is home to the Authority for the Advancement of Women and has therefore been given authority, responsibility and budget to help advance the status of women in Israel.

The proposal for Golan's new appointment also indicated that Golan and Chikli will put together a team to figure out how to transfer these responsibilities and authorities to the new ministry, according to N12.

In January, the Knesset Plenum approved the government's decision to appoint MK May Golan (Likud) as a minister without a portfolio in the Prime Minister's Office.

The decision was approved by a majority of 56 MKs, while 48 Knesset members voted against approving the decision.
