The announcement read: “COMMON THREADS – Thursday afternoon at Beit Knesset Ohel Ari, bring your knitting, crocheting, and needlepoint projects. Light refreshments will be served.” After Operation Swords of Iron was launched following October 7, a program was organized by Karen Last to get women together at the Ra’anana synagogue to work on their craft projects and support one another in a pleasant group setting during those very intense days as Israel was forced into war.

The synagogue was named Ohel Ari in 2006 in memory of Sgt. Ari Weiss, the son of Rabbi Stewart and Susie Weiss, who fell in battle in 2002 against Hamas terrorists.

One of the women attending Common Threads with her needlepoint was Suzanne Gitler. A resident of Teaneck, New Jersey, for the past 35 years, she arrived in Israel on October 5, 2023, and enjoyed a wonderful family holiday the next day, October 6. On the morning of October 7, sirens sounded as Hamas began raining rockets on Israel. Ra’anana was not spared.
