The delegation met with senior Egyptian intelligence officials in Cairo two days after a delegation from the Palestinian Islamic Jihad made a similar visit.

"Eygpt found itself under pressure from the PIJ to deliver what it promised" and Cairo is now pressing Israeli on that matter, said lecturer Ofir Winter.

“Instead of rockets, Hamas chose to attack Israel with fiery statements,” said a Palestinian journalist, adding that Gazans were expecting war.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi says the Gaza Strip needs more than $500 million for rebuilding efforts in the aftermath of the 11-day war between Israel and Hamas.

Musa Abu Marzouk, a senior Hamas official, said that his group’s dissatisfaction with Egypt was in the context of differences between “brothers.”

It is speculated that Lapid may meet with Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi. If so, he would return to him ancient Egyptian artifacts illegally smuggled into Israel. 

With close ties between the two militaries, Cairo and Jerusalem have been reported by foreign press to have been closely cooperating in the Sinai peninsula in the fight against ISIS and smugglers.

The former spy chiefs expressed a wide range of views on the impacts of the Biden administration’s withdrawal from Afghanistan on global security issues.
