The test took place at an outdoor test facility at a British military air base, using a converted Rolls-Royce AE 2100-A regional aircraft engine. 

Their splitting process is assisted by solar energy and lowers the amount of the invested electrical energy needed to break the chemical bonds in the water molecule to generate hydrogen and oxygen.

The turbine, which could soon operate on 100% hydrogen, is indicative of Israel’s position as a leading hydrogen energy innovator.

While most hydrogen is produced from natural gas in a non-sustainable process (gray hydrogen), it can also be produced using renewable energy (green hydrogen).

The Energy Ministry's main investment is a project focusing on the development of and transition into the use of hydrogen as a fuel for heavy transport.

The facility, located in Kibbutz Yotvata, would generate the green hydrogen for use in industrial infrastructures like transportation systems and industrial plants.

Saudi Arabia, the world's biggest oil exporter intends to produce and export something within the neighborhood of about 4 million tons of hydrogen by 2030.

Among five finalists, the startup was the only one from Israel to win in the competition.
