Texas is a state within the United States located in the south of the country. Nicknamed "The Lone Star State," Texas was previously an independent republic before being admitted to the US in 1845 as the 28th state. Today, Texas is the second-largest state in the US by population, second only to California, and by area, second only to Alaska. Its capital city is Austin and its largest city is Houston.
